Plein Air with Pastels

Join plein air painter Colette Savage for this introductory workshop on using pastels en plein air. To start, Colette will demonstrate her own pastel painting setup, and explain why she uses each part of it. She will also show participants how she begins a painting and the various techniques used to create a pastel painting en plein air. You will then work independently as Colette offers guidance and suggestions. The workshop will be held in the garden at Warfield’s, just across the street from main Street Arts.

Saturday, July 15 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Canceled due to low enrollment

Supplies to bring with you:

  • Soft Pastels (not oil pastels)
  • Easel or small portable table to hold your supplies
  • Pastel paper and a rigid surface to mount it to (Colette uses a brand of paper called Uart taped to a sheet of foam core, masonite, or gator-board)
  • Small bottle of rubbing alcohol
  • An inexpensive soft paint brush (less than 1” wide)
  • Masking tape
  • Other suggestions include: hand wipes, chair, sunscreen, hat with a brim to shield your eyes, a snack and bottle of water

You really don’t need any fancy equipment to paint outdoors! Each artist should consider their own needs. You do not need to buy expensive supplies!
