Less is More: Plein Air Essentials with Victoria Brzustowicz

Join Victoria Brzustowicz for this workshop made for experienced painters new to plein air, as well as novice painters. Learn strategies for tackling alla prima painting on location without taking your entire studio with you. Working with a limited palette and simple equipment, this workshop will teach you to set up your palette, pick a subject, and get a painting started quickly and confidently. The day will start with a short demo, but there will be plenty of time for painting and individual instruction.

Date: Saturday,  August 6, 2022,  9am–12pm
Location: Phelps trailhead of the Ontario Pathways trail (Route 96, just east of Route 488)

Please note, supplies are not included you will need the following supplies for this workshop:

• A painting panel with white surface (choose a size you’re comfortable with, but I suggest you don’t go too large! I like to bring a few panels of different sizes so I can pick the one that suits my scene. Some sizes to consider would be 10 x 10, 8 x 10,  9 x 12, 12 x 16, or 6 x 12.

• Oil colors*:
– Titanium White
– Hansa Yellow Light
– Napthol Red
– Ultramarine Blue

*If you already have paint, you don’t have to use these specific pigments. Contact Victoria and she will help you select three primaries from your existing collection of paints.

• You will need to bring everything normally needed for painting inside or out:
– Portable Easel (some available to borrow for the workshop)
– Palette
– Odorless Mineral Spirits for traditional oils/ or water and water spray bottle for water miscible oils
– Paper towels or rags
– Brushes (a variety of synthetic)
– Sketchbook or journal, and something to sketch with: pencil, charcoal, or markers
– Baby wipes

Be sure you dress for the weather with layered clothing, comfortable shoes, a backpack or cart for your gear, and a hat with brim. Since we are going to be near woods, wear bug spray and sun screen.

Victoria Brzustowicz is a life-long painter, and a native of Rochester, NY. She graduated from Wells College with a BA in Studio Art.

Abstract painting was Brzustowicz’s focus for many years, but in 2015 she was introduced to the techniques of painting alla prima through classes with noted plein air painter Carol L. Douglas. Since then she has focused on plein air painting, and has attended workshops with Lori Putnam, Sarah Linda Poly, Ken DeWaard, Hiu Lai Chong, and Kari Ganoung Ruiz.

Brzustowicz is co-founder and chair of the Greater Rochester Plein Air Painters, an inclusive, active group of painters that get together throughout the year to paint outside of the studio. She also teaches drawing, oil painting, and relief printing.
