JOIN US for the 6th Annual Plein Air in Clifton Springs: Saturday, September 12, 2026.
This will be a fun-filled day with 40+ talented, regional artists painting "en plein air" throughout zip code 14432. These registered artists will be painting picturesque homes or views within the town itself or venturing out to the country to capture horses, farms, and more...This year celebrates the 6th continuous year of this Clifton Springs community-based event and exhibition.
From 9am-noon on September 12th participating artists will set up their easels and supplies to paint throughout the 14432 zip code. The public is invited to walk or drive throughout Clifton Springs and see over 40 participating artists as they paint ‘en plain air’ from 9am-noon.
From 3-6pm Main Street Arts will open to host the free, public artist reception celebrating these artists and their new ‘plain air’ work from the morning's painting session.
In addition to the 40+ new paintings being created during the 9am-1pm outdoor painting session, participating artists are also exhibiting previously completed landscape paintings on floor 2 in the Art Resource Library. Adjacent to the exhibited plein air paintings, on floor 2 in the Art Resource Library, will be a collection of books featuring artists who specialize in ‘plein air’ and ‘landscape’ genre artwork.
Painting ‘en plein air’ is a French term that arose during the 19th century when artists, especially in western Europe, were setting up to paint outside to more closely capture the “essence” of light, weather, and place. Loose, quick brushwork in oil paint upon canvas is an iconic part of this process-connecting artists participating in this year’s event with those of the past.
We look forward to seeing you during the Saturday 9/12 event or at the exhibition which runs from 9/12 - 10/14.
