Mariana Baquero

Mariana Baquero of Gainesville, FL

Artist Statement:

“Clay is the perfect medium for telling stories. In its raw state it is plastic, recording every touch of the maker. Heat transforms it into an archival material, allowing the past to speak to the future. I make objects that connect people through the shared experiences of eating and drinking. Some of the most hilarious, heartbreaking, and meaningful stories I’ve ever heard were told over a cup of coffee or a plate of food. I imprint the surface of my vessels with handwritten stories of my family, culled from letters, pictures, conversations over the dinner table, and my own imaginings. Texture created by found household textiles and custom stencils obliterates and obscures some of the text. Just like stories passed on through generations, you never get the whole story.”

Mariana Baquero was a corporate lawyer until she discovered the pleasures of working with clay. She graduated from the University of Florida with an MFA in ceramics in 2016. She is currently the Arts Specialist at the J. Wayne Reitz Union Arts & Crafts Center at the University of Florida.
