Sean VandenBrink

Sean VandenBrink of Detroit, MI

Artist Statement:

“My work is an attempt to explore what it means to be in relationship to objects and place rather than mere consumers. The surface and forms draw inspiration from the patterns and structures that connect us. Plants, river networks and rock formations reveal life’s tendency toward repetition and diversity. Conversely, my work is influenced by my job as an automotive clay modeler. The process used to transform sketches of cars and interior spaces into life size wax models is the same process I use to manifest my own ideas into structure and form. It is in the interplay of nature and industry that these forms emerge.”

Sean VandenBrink (He/Him) is a Detroit based artist and maker. His work explores concepts of ritual, ecosystems, and the interplay of natural and unnatural. He graduated with a BFA from Calvin College with an emphasis in ceramics and is currently pursuing a MA in Ceramics at Wayne State University. Sean works as a clay sculptor at Ford Motor Company and is teaching industrial clay modeling at Lawrence Tech University. He enjoys being surrounded by animals and friends in his big old stone home in Detroit where they have carved out spaces to be creative and grow.
