Siera Matsuo

Siera Matsuo of Seattle, WA

Artist Statement:

“My work is an exploration of culture and identity. The vessels I create are all byproducts of my mind’s way of working through generational traumas and feelings of otherness. The process from beginning to end brings me closer to the ones that came before me and helps me feel connected to something much larger than myself. I am drawn to making functional wares that revolve around the rituals of daily life with the hopes that the user will also connect with them beyond their utilitarian purpose.”

Siera Matsuo (she/her) is a 4th and 3rd generation Japanese/Filipina from ‘Aiea, Hawai‘i. Originally a microbiology major, she first moved to Seattle to work in the biotech industry. In 2018 she signed up for a two-hour introductory pottery class and was instantly drawn to the craft. Since then, she has worked in various pottery studios and stores in Seattle. When not playing with clay, Siera enjoys rock climbing, reading horror/sci-fi books, and making bento with her best friend Kuppi always by her side.
