“The way I approach ceramics is heavily influenced by my design and printmaking background. My creative process is fueled by my desire to find some crisp and perfect moments on each piece, while also embracing the natural tendency for imperfection in any handmade object. I am drawn to layering my surface designs and often use hand or vinyl cut stencils to apply my motifs. My glaze choices support the sharp edges of stencils with flat, semi-matte colors and oftentimes areas of raw, naked clay that work in contrast to the finish. I like to say that my work puts the ‘fun’ in functional because I think when viewed as a whole, it’s clear that I enjoy playing with my materials, techniques, and forms, never getting too stuck on one series or specific style of creating.” — Breanne Rupp
Breanne currently works in St. Augustine, Florida, where she runs a co-op style studio, Make Space. She grew up in the Republic of Panama, graduated with a BFA from Flagler College, and moved to San Francisco for 9 years post-grad. There she worked tangentially in the restaurant industry as well as the non-profit sector of arts education. It was through working in restaurants that she was inspired to try making “functional” art, and took up wheel throwing. Since moving back to Florida, she has opened Make Space as a ceramics and screenprinting studio. Make Space has studio members, classes for adults & kids, hosts guest teachers in other mediums, organizes grassroots events and provides scholarships to local youth.
